RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
