A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
