Whenever a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
