The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense about him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you must offer him your sweater too.
The apparent and direct truth that Christ of the gospels requests a type of radical love centered on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to see the persistent defiance to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the best parts in US history.

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it suggest acting as if the most negative about the nation and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both modesty and faith, a mixture that committed American Christians should embrace.
