The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Legal and Operational Constraints

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but not the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
